Riu Palace Macao Punta Cana Review – My Adults-Only Caribbean Getaway

If you're looking for an elegant adults-only all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana, Riu Palace Macao is definitely one to consider. I recently spent my vacation here, and I honestly had such a relaxing time. From the beautiful beachfront location and comfortable rooms to the excellent food and tropical atmosphere, this resort offers everything you need for a carefree Caribbean holiday.
In this blog post, I'll share my experience staying at Riu Palace Macao Punta Cana, what you can expect when you arrive, the rooms, restaurants, Elite Club upgrades, and why I think this resort is a fantastic choice for couples, friends, or anyone looking to unwind by the turquoise waters of the Dominican Republic.
Where is Riu Palace Macao Located?
Riu Palace Macao is located on the famous Arena Gorda Beach in the Bávaro area of Punta Cana, one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the Dominican Republic. The soft white sand, crystal-clear turquoise water, and rows of palm trees create exactly the kind of tropical scenery most people imagine when planning a Caribbean vacation.
The resort is approximately 25-30 kilometres (16-19 miles) from Punta Cana International Airport (PUJ).
If you've booked your vacation through a travel company, your airport transfer is usually included in your all-inclusive package. After collecting your luggage, you simply head outside the terminal where representatives direct you to your transfer bus.
The bus ride generally takes around 30 to 40 minutes, depending on traffic and whether your bus makes additional hotel stops before reaching Riu Palace Macao. Personally, I enjoy these transfers because it's the first chance to see a little bit of the Dominican Republic outside the airport. Palm trees, colourful houses, roadside fruit stands, motorcycles, and tropical scenery make the journey fly by.
Before you know it, you're pulling into the entrance of the resort and officially beginning your vacation.
First Impressions: A Beautiful Open-Air Reception
One of the first things I noticed when arriving at Riu Palace Macao was the beautiful open-air reception area.
Instead of walking into a completely enclosed lobby, you're welcomed by warm Caribbean breezes, tropical landscaping, and a bright, elegant atmosphere. It immediately feels like you've left everyday life behind.
The décor combines crisp white tones with tasteful Caribbean accents. The walls are decorated with tropical-inspired wallpapers featuring lush exotic plants, adding just the right amount of colour without feeling overwhelming. Natural wood elements, comfortable seating areas, and stylish lighting complete the sophisticated yet relaxed look.
Check-in was straightforward, and while waiting for our room keys, I couldn't stop admiring the lobby's airy design. It's a lovely introduction to the resort and immediately sets the tone for a relaxing holiday.
The Resort and Accommodation
Although Riu Palace Macao is part of the larger RIU resort complex—which also includes Riu Palace Punta Cana, Riu Bambu, and Riu Palace Bávaro—the hotel itself feels very manageable. Unlike some enormous resorts where it can take 15 or 20 minutes to walk from your room to the beach or restaurants, I found Riu Palace Macao easy to get around. Everything is conveniently laid out, so whether I was heading to the pool, the beach, or one of the restaurants, it never felt like a long walk. I really appreciated that balance of having access to a large resort complex while still enjoying the more intimate feel of the hotel itself.
The hotel has 476 rooms spread across four floors, and thankfully, there are elevators, making it easy to reach your room even if you're carrying heavy luggage or simply don't feel like climbing stairs after a long day at the beach.
We were lucky enough to stay on the fourth floor, and I honestly couldn't have asked for a better view.
Every morning I opened the curtains to a spectacular panorama of the Caribbean Sea. Seeing the sun sparkle across the turquoise water while enjoying my morning coffee on the balcony quickly became one of my favourite vacation rituals.
Sometimes it's the simple moments like these that become the best memories.
The rooms are spacious, bright, and decorated in modern tropical style with light colours that perfectly match the beach setting. Everything felt clean, comfortable, and well maintained, creating a relaxing space to return to after spending the day by the pool or at the beach.

It's easy to imagine spending lazy mornings floating in the pool before breakfast or enjoying a quiet evening swim without leaving your room area.

If you're celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary, birthday, or simply want a little extra luxury, I think the Elite Club is definitely worth considering.
Dining at El Patio Buffet
Food is always an important part of any all-inclusive vacation, and El Patio is the resort's main buffet restaurant.
Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served here every day, with a huge variety of international dishes alongside Dominican specialties.
One thing I really appreciated was having the choice to dine either inside the air-conditioned restaurant or outside on the terrace.
Whenever possible, I chose the terrace.
There's just something special about eating breakfast outdoors while surrounded by palm trees and listening to tropical birds. It really makes you slow down and enjoy vacation life.
Breakfast includes everything from fresh tropical fruit and smoothies to made-to-order omelettes, pancakes, pastries, cereals, bacon, eggs, cheeses, cold cuts, and freshly baked bread.
Lunch offers salads, grilled meats, seafood, pasta, pizza, burgers, fresh vegetables, Dominican favourites, and plenty of desserts.
Dinner becomes even more elaborate with themed evenings featuring cuisines from around the world.
No matter how picky you are, I think you'll easily find something you'll enjoy.
À La Carte Restaurants
One thing I really liked at Riu Palace Macao is that you don't need reservations for the à la carte restaurants.
Instead of planning your dinners days in advance, it's simply first come, first served.
Personally, I prefer this system because it gives you much more flexibility. If you suddenly decide you'd rather eat steak instead of Italian food, you can simply head over and join the waiting list if necessary.

Kabuki
If you enjoy Asian cuisine, Kabuki serves a variety of Japanese-inspired dishes in a modern setting. Sushi, Asian flavours, and beautifully presented meals make it a popular choice.
Volare
Volare is the Italian restaurant, offering classic pasta dishes, pizzas, delicious desserts, and Mediterranean-inspired flavours.
Krystal
Krystal serves contemporary fusion cuisine with elegant presentation and creative dishes that feel a little more upscale.
Steakhouse
Meat lovers will probably find themselves returning here more than once.
The Steakhouse serves grilled steaks, chicken, seafood, and hearty side dishes in a relaxed atmosphere.
Elite Club Restaurant
Guests staying in Elite Club accommodations also have access to the exclusive Elite Club Restaurant, offering an even more personalized dining experience.
A Relaxing Adults-Only Atmosphere
One of my favourite things about staying here was that Riu Palace Macao is an adults-only resort.
Without children's activities or busy family pools, the atmosphere feels peaceful and laid-back.
Whether you're reading a book by the pool, enjoying a cocktail at the swim-up bar, or taking a long walk along the beach, everything feels a little calmer.
I noticed many couples celebrating anniversaries or honeymoons, but there were also groups of friends and solo travellers enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.
The Beach
The beach is exactly what most people dream of when planning a trip to Punta Cana.
Soft white sand stretches for what seems like miles, lined with tall coconut palms providing natural shade throughout the day.
The Caribbean Sea constantly changes colour depending on the sunlight—from light turquoise to deep blue—and the water is wonderfully warm.
I spent hours simply walking along the shoreline, listening to the waves and enjoying the tropical scenery.
Early mornings were especially beautiful before the beach became busier.
Pools and Relaxation
The resort features several beautiful swimming pools surrounded by comfortable loungers and tropical landscaping.
Whether you enjoy joining the activities organized by the entertainment team or simply relaxing with a frozen drink under the sun, there's plenty of space to find your perfect spot.
I alternated between the beach and the pool throughout the day, depending on whether I felt like swimming in the ocean or lounging by the water with a good book.
Is Riu Palace Macao Worth It?
After spending my vacation here, I can honestly say that Riu Palace Macao exceeded my expectations.
The combination of a gorgeous beachfront location, comfortable rooms, friendly staff, excellent food, and relaxing adults-only atmosphere made it an unforgettable Caribbean escape.
I especially loved our fourth-floor ocean-view room, the open-air reception, the variety of restaurants, and the flexibility of not having to reserve à la carte dinners days in advance.
If you're looking for an all-inclusive resort in Punta Cana where you can truly relax while still enjoying great dining, beautiful surroundings, and comfortable accommodations, Riu Palace Macao is an excellent choice.
Would I come back?
Absolutely.
Between the turquoise Caribbean Sea, swaying palm trees, spectacular sunrises from our balcony, and the easy-going atmosphere, this is the kind of place that makes you start thinking about your next trip before you've even flown home.
